Songs that there arent really "best" versions of... |
Some songs dont have "best versions" because they're all pretty much the same, or maybe the song, as written, doesnt really stand out, or some other reason I cant articulate. Here's a list of just a few that I can think of:
Me & My Uncle
Jack-A-Roe
Mexicali
Wheel
Lovelight (mostly later era versions)
Baby Blue
Brokedown

Baby Blue, for one, was like a fine wine, in that it got better with age.
It certainly wouldn't qualify for "best of" status, but let's review the Telluride Brokedown Palace, shall we:

By the way, for those who are not familiar with this one, check it out, but I'm not laying it out as a welcome mat for thread hijackers. Let's see if we can stay on patkelly's topic.
But it's still pretty damned funny.

Maybe I need to look for that James Cotton show later. I keep getting an error message when I click on it.

huh? runied? i can't articulate, but i see solid leads pointing to stellar versions. if we all missed the boat, we at least all tried. UNLESS, your point was - there are no standout versions of the songs you listed? in that case, i disagree. listen to the wheel link from '81 and you'll hear why...

I should've known- around here you have to be clear in minute detail. I was hoping for other songs that you cant really point to outstanding or great versions. And your Wheel was as good as all the other wheels I've heard.

Re: Songs that there arent really 'best' versions of... |
I would disagree with baby blue and especially lovelight. I think there are tons of great lovelights that stretch across the dead's run. Now if you feel lovelight doesn't exist after pigpen, then that's a different story.
I would also add....
way to go home
that would be somehting
rain
don't ease me in
...to your list. Not surprising, most of these selections are "latter day" dead.

SO, the thread makes an assumption, your assumption.
Others point out versions that may not be "pretty much the same" Is that a bad thing?
OK, Sugar Mag's are pretty much the same to me also.

for mexicali, 8-27-72 is my absoluteeeeeeee favourite version of.. and for me n' my uncle, I like the versions where jerry gets crazy with the cowboy style lead guitar, and plays quiet lead when bob is singing :DDD

all the Dark Stars suck!
AND, today is my birthday, so you cannot be angry with me for saying it. Even though I am only trying to stir the turd.:)
P.S. - Lighten-up Pat. To me, most Shakedowns fall into that category. Hard to find a real stand-out...
